The Volunteer Handbook was launched in May following in-depth research in to legal requirements and best practice in managing volunteers; as well as consultation with our volunteers as to what they would find useful to know when they join a project. The handbook is a working document produced to assist our local projects in the induction, support and development of their Community Champions volunteers.
Every new volunteer receives a printed version as part of their induction and projects also have electronic versions they can use to pull out different sections as needed for inductions, meetings etc. The handbook explains the asset-based and community engagement approach of the Community Champions programme and contains lots of information on what we aim to achieve and what the programme does.
It talks in detail about the role of the Community Champion and what volunteers are asked to give by way of time and commitment. When Dana Schwartz started writing about a 19th-century pandemic ravaging Edinburgh in her latest book, Anatomy: A Love Story, she had no idea Methodological challenges result from a lack of consensus on how to define volunteerism. There is still no comprehensive assessment of methodological differences for counting volunteer hours and researchers have not clearly documented which approaches yield the most accurate estimates.
More generally, on-going analysis of volunteer hours in national datasets is largely missing and research that directly measures either the replacement value or the organizational value of volunteers is in its infancy. You are not authenticated to view the full text of this chapter or article.
