Notebook computer users can specify an alternative power scheme that will take effect when the PC is running on battery power. EPA recommends setting computers to enter system standby or hibernate after 15 to 60 minutes of inactivity.
To save even more, set monitors to enter sleep mode after 5 to 20 minutes of inactivity. The lower the setting, the more energy you save. The "Turn off hard disks" setting does not save much power, and can be ignored. If you are not able to select a hibernate timeout, you may need to enable the hibernate feature.
Click OK. The new preference item appears in the details pane. Additional considerations If a user Power Options item processes after a computer Power Options item, user settings replace the active settings, which may have been made active previously by a computer or user Power Options item. The local administrator and Power Users administrative group can manually change their power settings using the control panel; other users cannot. Regardless, the settings configured for users become active when they log on and remain so even after they log off.
When we last left our example computer, the active power profile was power settings C, which were created when the user changed their settings using the user interface.
Power item B becomes the active power profile because it is the last power profile that is made active. Makes sense right? No, not in this case. The user loads their power profile from their user profile, and it becomes the active power profile.
The power profile does not change until the user changes it the need to be a local administrator or during Group Policy refresh when the computer reapplies the GPP Power item; thus becoming the active power profile. I could easily add another five pages to cover all the different combinations of GPP Power items between computer and user settings.
However, the main important thing to remember is there is only one active power profile for the entire computer running Windows XP. And, the active power profile is the power profile that was made active on the computer, regardless if it was done in the context of the user or computer.
