Please advise. I downloaded Arena and put a Rybka engine in it and it is great. But to help me learn chess as I still am a struggling player I was wondering about the new Chessmaster. Is it really that much better than my CM ?
Originally posted by grit I downloaded Arena and put a Rybka engine in it and it is great. That is a PSP version, It looks and sounds shockingly bad but is absolutely nothing like the PC chessmaster 11 GM edition, they are totally different games. CM11 is a looong way ahead of cm, it is flashier looking with lots of pretty whistles and bells, it is however much the same as far as opponents are concerned as CM, same kind of range with same kind of freeplay, rated and tournament game settings.
The biggest difference is the academy that comes with CM11 that can be extremelly helpful to beginners and even players like myself if they can be bothered to actually sit and study games, I cant , it also has a very large database of games to study too.
So, if you want cm with todays graphics and an acadamy and database of games thrown in then I would highly recommend it. The only downside for me personally is that the opponents seem to throw away pieces randomly until you have what it desires to be a material advantage or handicap and then starts playing better until it has got its material back, then it will notice you struggling again and randomly give you another piece.
It may just be me that found that but opponents can sometimes be quite artificial, more so than lots of chess games out there, As a reminder, the link provided is for a different game on a much more limited machine so I wouldnt use that as a basis for your decision. Originally posted by grit So many people are raving about the Chessmaster Grandmaster edition, 11, and I wonder if there is that much difference in that and my CM ?
The former is excellent, while the latter is so-so. The rest of the tutorials are the same. There are some extra cute features in GM edition, including some weird extra chess types games that are kind of fun, to a point. Is it worth shelling out the extra money for GM edition? I don't know what it costs now, but it's your money; you need to decide how to spend it. If it's between that and a RHP subscription though, I'd take the subscription. I have both 10th and 11th edition, to be honest, they are almost the same, except that the 11th have one more tutorial Mark Adkins.
And when the next version arrives, rush out and buy that one. And the next one, and the next one. Because if once you stop buying new versions of "Chessmaster", you can never succeed at chess, or indeed, anything else in life. Don't play ANY of them, or even take them out of their shiny boxes. Simply look and them and sigh, then scour the chess magazines looking for the next version. Dec 23, 0. Post anything you want to discuss about the game!
Ive been using it for about 1 month now, I really like the Josh Waitskin tutorials the Art of Learning, they are worth the price of ownership in themselves. They could have offered a broader selection of chess pieces though, say some Legend Staunton Chess Sets. It's a complete fluke. I own 10th edition and there is almost nothing different between my version and the "Grandmaster" Edition other than graphics. My wife hinted that i might get it for Christmas. If you get it for Christmas, just be sure to download the latest patch. I like Josh's tutorials, because he doesn't just talk about the technical aspects of the game, he also talks a lot about the psychology of competing and I think that's an issue that's been sadly underresearched in the chess world as opposed to other games.
There is a lot of books that will explain winning exchanges and playing positions and mastering endgames, but very little about the emotional factors of playing a game.
Dec 24, 0. BTW, did anyone beat the Chessmaster? Mar 29, 0. I have a silly question as im sure they would make everyone buy the game, I have Chessmaster 10th edition if I buy this version can you play against people with 10th edition or only play against people with the same version? I ask because id like to play my son when im out of town and wondered if i should buy another copy of 10th edition. Sometimes playing computers can be useful. For example, when I want to test my understanding of an endgame I use a strong engine like Rybka or a tablebase.
When I want to play a bunch of blitz games in a particular opening line, I often pull out Chessmaster. Dec 16, 0. Oct 10, 0. Dec 28, 0. RooksBailey wrote: Unbeliever wrote: It's a complete fluke.
